Good day

I just purchased a new (old) Old Town canoe in Washington state that is SN 177097 in fair shape. I will need to re-canvas it as it is a canoe that has been enjoyed. The prior owner thinks it was built in 1967. I would appreciate any information that is available for this canoe! Thank you.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 177097 is a 16 foot long, guide model with a keel. It was built between November, 1966 and January, 1967. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (guide's special) green. It shipped on April 12th, 1967 to Montesano, Washington. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Canoe canvas typically lasts about twenty years in normal use so it is not surprising that you may need to replace it now. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you very much for the very prompt and helpful response. All the information above matches what I thought I knew about this canoe. I had one very much like it when I was growing up in eastern Maine. I'm looking forward to giving new life to this old girl over the next few months or so.
