So about a week back I traded someone a propane heater I had collecting dust for a cedar strip and canvas canoe, outer gunwales and most of the topside like seats and cross members need replaced, I havnt had the chance to pull the canvas off yet or get it into the shop to see how much restoration will need to be done, it still floats and from looking at the interior the planks look good but I’m not sure of under the canvas. Where would I find any identification markings or means of possibly figuring out what type of canoe it is, it’s 18 ft long as well if that helps?

My guess would be a home made or a Canadian builder based on the seats. The information at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/791/ may help you search for a serial number. If it was built after 1972 then it may have a hull identification number on the starboard stern. The information at http://www.usps.org/national/safety/HIN/HIN.pdf may help you decode this number.
