Kennebec s/n 14287

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Would someone be so kind as to provide any available information on Kennebec 14287 please?

I recently relocated it from Maine (Dexter, Wassookeag Lake) where it has spent the last ~ 75 years. It is currently in north Georgia awaiting a determination of it's long term fate. Rotten decks and stems, moderate planking and ribs (pending further inspection) and fiberglassed.

The previous owner bought it from a camp in Belgrade Lakes region.

Welcome back, the Kennebec canoe with number 14287 is an 18.5 foot long Maine Guide model as shown on page 276 of volume two in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Mansell on June 5th, 1920. The canvas covering and first filler coat were applied by Roy on June 12th, 1920. The rails were applied by Grant on June 14th, 1920. The original color was gray and it shipped to Belgrade Lake, Maine on July 12th, 1921. Scans showing these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum. The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. More information about Kennebec is available at http://www.wcha.org/store/historic-wood-canoe-and-boat-company-catalog-collection in the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson
