Curious about Wooden Canoes
I took in on trade a newer old town canoe, I believe I found a serial number-xtc05993e101 The man told me it was used for racing in Grayling Michigan. I took a picture but not sure how to post that yet. Just wondering what the value is, the canoe is in very good condition. Thanks in advance, I am located in Kalkaska Michigan.

I cannot figure out how to get a picture of canoe on here. This is not a wooden canoe, did not know where to post this.

Here's how to post photos: http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?469-How-to-post-photos

Here's a key to getting info out of the HIN: http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm

If I'm reading it right (no bets), it looks like it may have been made in May of 2001. Others with more knowledge may confirm or deny... :)

Paul,
Thanks for your help, still no luck, file might be to big, I am not very computer literate. I might be able to text a picture of canoe if someone could post the picture, not even sure I can do that though. Guy is coming tomorrow to look at canoe to purchase, I thought the guy that traded it said they were worth hundreds of dollars, don't know if he meant new or used. I will try to get a hold of the guy that traded canoe in and see if he has an idea of the value. Thank you again

You have an Old Town from 2001 as Paul mentioned. They stopped keeping paper records around 1994 as shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html so there aren't any old style build records available to confirm the model name that goes with your number.

Special characters in the file name can confuse the picture upload process here. A name like Fred's-canoe.jpg will fail while something simple with alpha-numeric characters alone will be fine.

The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 about pricing a wooden canoe may help since many of the same principles apply. Most plastic canoes sell for a few hundred dollars. See eBay.com for some comparison sales. Good luck,

Benson

Benson,
Thank you for your reply, I went to ebay, could not find the exact style of canoe, was just hoping someone had a similar old town and could advise on a fair price. Does anyone know how much this canoe was new? Would you say 4 to 6 hundred would be fair? When I saved picture i put oldtown canoe for file does it have to be one name with no spaces? Sorry for questions, just struggling here.

The pages below show a summary of the canoes listed the 2001 catalog. You may be able to guess your model from the dimensions and weight. The list prices ranged from about $500 to $1500. It is impossible to estimate the value of your canoe without seeing it in person to identify the model and determine the condition. Most old plastic canoes like these sell in the $300 to $400 range if they are in very good condition. You often have to pay someone to haul them away if they are in bad condition. Good luck,

Benson
