2013 Events

May 25-26: Display your canoe at the 3rd annual celebration of the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum in Spooner in northwest Wisconsin on Saturday, May 25, and join chapter and museum folks for a paddle on the Namekagon River, Sunday, May 26. Display your wooden canoe or boat at the museum, 310 N. Front Street, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. We’ll begin the Sunday shuttle from the Museum at 10 a.m.

Also, the St. Croix River Association (stcroixriverassociation.org) is coordinating a seven-day paddle on the Namekagon River, May 18-24. For more information and to register, check out the association’s website. Day paddlers are welcome.

June 22: Canoe the Sugar River south of Brodhead, WI, to the Pecatonic River between Harrison and Shirland, IL. Meet at the Colored Sands Boat Landing on the Sugar River at 10 a.m. The landing is mid-trip. We will put in upstream and canoe back to the landing and either stop there or shuttle again and continue to the Pecatonic, depending on participant interests.

Directions: From I-90, exit onto Highway 75 and go west through South Beloit. The road becomes highways 2 & 75 for a while. Turn right onto Prairie Hill Road at the stop light. Cross the Rock River and turn left at the stop sign onto South Bluff Road. Go about 200 yards and turn right onto Yale Bridge Road and follow it to the Colored Sands Boat Landing on the right.

From I-39 south, exit onto Highway 20 west and continue to Meridian Road, west side of Rockford. Turn right onto Meridian Road and follow it about 10 miles, crossing highways 70 and 75, to Shirland Road. Turn left onto Shirland Road and go to Boswell Road. Turn right onto Boswell. Shirland School is on the left. Follow Boswell Road to Yale Bridge Road and turn left. Continue to the Colored Sands Boat Landing on the right.

From the West, Monroe or Brodhead, go east on Highway 81 to South Roy Road. Turn right on S. Roy Road. At the state line, the road turns into Hauley Road and appears to curve to the left. Go straight on Hauley Road to Yale Bridge Road. Turn right and continue to the Colored Sands Boat Landing on the right.

For those who would like to camp, there is a state campground at the Sugar River Forest Preserve, just south of the boat landing.

July 26-28: Canoe, camp and fish on the Red Cedar River in Barron and Dunn Counties. The Red Cedar River originates in Red Cedar Lake above Rice Lake in Barron County and flows southward, eventually joining the Chippewa River in Dunn County. It is a gently flowing flatwater river with reportedly good smallmouth and walleye fishing.

We’ll Camp Friday and Saturday at the Myron Park campground, just northwest of the village of Sand Creek in Dunn County. Myron Park Campground is located on the river. We will make day paddles from there. There are four day-long stretch to choose from. We’ll paddle one Saturday and one Sunday, depending on participant interests.

Look for the WCHA banner at one of the campsites. Camping is $10 per night; $20 if electrical hook-up. The campground usually doesn’t fill on non-holiday weekends, and the Chapter will reserve a few sites, but to assure a site, reserve a space (www.dunncountywi.govoffice2.com or donath@chibardun.net, 715-837-1066.

Directions: From Highway 53 south, exit onto Highway 64 west. Turn right onto County M to Sand Creek. Continue to the junction with County I and take County I north to Myron Park.
From the North, exit County M west at Auburn to Sand Creek. Take County I north at the junction in Sand Creek to the Myron Park Campground.

August 10: Paddle and socialize at the annual canoe and duck boat gathering at Norm’s Hideaway on Lake Koshkonong between Ft. Atkinson and Edgerton, 1 p.m. start.

Directions: From Albion, about 4 miles north of Edgerton, take Highway 106 east about five miles. Turn right onto Loga Road. Turn right onto Carcajou Road. Turn left at W8639 Kuehn Road. From Fort Atkinson, take Highway 106 west to Carcajou Rd. Turn left on Carcajou Road to Kuehn Road. For more information, Dennis Ehle, 608-873-6313.

Sept. 12-16: Sixth Annual Jag Lake Fall Color get together, our most popular event of the year. Camp, paddle, fish, bike and socialize at the Jag Lake Campground and nearby waters, Boulder Junction, Vilas County.

We have the group campground reserved Thursday through Sunday evening so you can arrive on Thursday and leave Monday morning. We’ll paddle on Jag Lake daily with sojourns to nearby waters for those interested. There’ll be a group dinner Saturday evening. A $5 donation is asked. Camping fee is $20 for the weekend.

Directions: Go 13 miles north of Woodruff on Hwy. 51. Turn right onto County H. Go 1.4 miles and turn right onto North Creek Road. Follow it one mile to the campground on the left.
