E.H. Gerrish

Kathryn Klos

squirrel whisperer
Hoping others will jump in with pictures or descriptions of the Gerrish canoes they own and/or have seen, so we can get a better handle on the body of his work.

Made a YouTube video of two beauties owned by Dave McDaniel and will post pictures of others in the replies.

What appears to be oak trim on a Gerrish may actually be American chestnut, which has the beautiful grain of oak but is lighter in weight. A beautiful, majestic tree... which went into some breath-taking boats.

This video may be helpful to those needing to replicate a Gerrish seat.

16 footer, open wales

Unrestored 16 footer with open gunwales. The one original seat led me to suspect it was a Gerrish. The other seat is an Old Town replacement... and both seats are attached (to our amusement) with diamond-head bolts (obviously not original!).

Gerrish name stenciled on planking in the same manner as the nameplate seen on other Gerrish canoes.

Decks on this canoe are deeply undercut and have a very nice feel. It doesn't appear that they ever had coaming but are as they always were-- so this isn't the same deck that appears in the 1898 catalog on the Historic Wood Canoe CD.

There's no indication that this canoe had the "nod to lashings" seen on some Gerrish canoes.

There's a missing piece of trim on the top of the gunwales... the beading on the outside edge is there, but it's missing from the inside.
