Carleton

The Carleton canoe with number 17233 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, and a floor rack. It was built between 1922 and March, 1923. The original exterior paint design was bright red and a half inch black stripe edged in gold with Greek ends. This was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design37.gif which was known as the Old Town design number 37. It shipped on May 15th, 1923 to Detroit, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link under the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Your life membership to the WCHA is much appreciated.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The Old Town record for this number shows a similar HW and is attached below in case the Carleton record isn't a good match.
