(I received this request, and if I had a suitable canoe, I'd be tempted to participate for the kicks. If interested, please contact Mr. Legler directly - Dan)

I am in urgent need of a birch bark canoe for a movie we are making in upstate NY, and I was hoping that you might steer me in the right direction. Here's the text from a CL listing I made this morning in Syracuse, that explains in full.

  • We a looking for a typical, usable BIRCH BARK CANOE and PADDLES for a scene in a movie to be filming around SYRACUSE. It will be pulled up on the shore and paddled in the water by 2 people. The the story is set around 1814, and the canoe belongs to a french trapper, so it would not be an ornate one. If you are a canoe builder, etc. I would also ask that you might want to be on set in case any small repairs have to be made, that they be done by the owner.
  • We are a small indie film, but would be able to pay you a fair amount for your canoe and your trouble. If you wish to donate your canoe and time, I could arrange for screen credit.
  • We do film this on Monday, June 6, as well as another day not yet set.

Thank you!
Steven Legler

Hm...well, for true authenticity they should build one right on the spot, don't you think? Are there any big birch trees in Onondaga Park?
The concerns about damage and repairs are an ominous note for anyone that might lend them a canoe to consider.
