1951 Old Town Guide?

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello - new member. I was just gifted a 1951 OT Guide and was hoping to confirm the year and model. Serial number is 188638, proceeded by 18, and followed by D59908. The D59908 looks to be hand carved.

Thanks for the help!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 188638 is an 18 foot long guide model with rub rails, a keel, outside stems, a painter ring, mast seat, and mast step. It was built between February and November, 1972. The original exterior paint color was yellow and white. It was shipped on November 29th, 1972 to Spokane, Washington. The back side of the record shows that the warranty card was returned from Spokane, Washington on December 18th, 1972. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The D59908 was probably added after it left the factory. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Rondanee,
Welcome to the WCHA. There is a very active WCHA chapter in the Northwest that you might check out.
Good luck with the restoration of your OT Guide.
Jim
