Curious about Wooden Canoes
Does anyone have a 1940 OTCA 17 that has original (or correct) decks? I need dimensions and or pictures. CS grade, original decks were birch.

I have an 18 foot Otca from 1936 with original decks as shown below. Mine is AA grade with mahogany decks but the shape should be the same as your CS grade. See http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?attachments/4224/ for a copy of the build record and http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?attachments/10026/ for the rest of the canoe. The rough dimensions are 20 inches from the tip to the center of the curve up the middle, 23.5 inches along each side, and 9.25 inches across the bottom of the curve at the widest part. Let me know if you need anything else. Good luck,

Benson

Thank you very much for all the detail. Another question - that little lip I see at the edge of the curve - is it carved into the deck or is it another applied piece? It appears to be a shapely bent piece about a 1/2" wide in plan, that tapers to a point at each end.

The little lip at the edge of the curve is not carved into the deck. It is another applied piece as you describe but does not taper to a point. There should be notches in the inside gunwale for the square ends as shown in the examples below from 1941 and 1951.

Island Falls Canoe will sell you pre-cut and bent 20” decks, most likely from original Old Town bending forms.

Thank you for the information. I looked at an early canoe today but it has been glassed. The wood appears to be in pretty good shape
