#137952 Old Town

Welcome, the Old Town with serial number 137952 is a seven and a half foot long dinghy from 1943 and number 187952 went on a 16 foot long fiberglass FG model from 1972 so neither of them seem like a good match for a 16 foot long wooden Otca model. Can you send some pictures of the serial numbers from each end and a few showing the decks and interior of this canoe? The information at https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/791/ may help if any of the numbers are hard to read. Thanks,

Benson

The Old Town canoe with serial number 131952 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between March and July, 1941. The original exterior paint color was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design43.gif which was known as the design number 43. Please attach some pictures if the original design is still showing. It shipped on August 5th, 1942 to Utica, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will contribute, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Benson
