Before and after: This 1981 Old Town Molitor model canoe was left out in the weather in Florida for many years. Almost all of the trim was completely rotten, the interior was blackened, and the exterior was mottled with lichens. The rub rails and outside stems rotted to the point that only bits of wood were left around the screws, and the outwales weren’t much better. It seemed beyond recovery, but after the owner’s death, his best friend wanted it restored in the owner’s memory. To get full length material for outwales and rubrails, and for outside stems and decks, local white oak trees were milled with the help of a good friend in Georgia. At the new caretaker’s request, the original fiberglass hull covering was replaced with canvas. He was moved nearly to tears when he saw his friend’s newly restored canoe. ASSEMBLY GATHERING: The canoe Vayu, a smoothskin lapstrake Ugo model built by J.H. Rushton circa 1887, was photographed as a celebrated guest at the 2019 WCHA Annual Assembly featuring centenarian canoes in Paul Smiths, NY. Vayu was owned and paddled for many years by Rushton biographer Atwood Manley. Its visit to Assembly was made possible by the St. Lawrence County (NY) Historical Society, Canton Town and Village Historian Linda Casserley, and Greg Howe, a long-time WCHA member, and friend and mentee of the late Atwood Manley. Vayu sat on Atwood's porch when he wasn't using it. If you look closely you might be able to see where I drooled on it back in 1972.

I love this. It has captured everything so beautifully and looks as if it could be a painting. Great photo Michael. For this and many more great photos by WCHA members buy your copy of the 2022 WCHA Calendar.
