OT Build record please

The Old Town canoe with serial number 180892 is a 15 foot long lightweight model with a keel. It was built between June and July, 1968 and shipped on July 22nd, 1969 to Winsted, Conn. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was returned from the factory for repairs on September 4th, 1969 as shown on the back side of the card. It was repainted dark green and then shipped to Newbury, Mass. on September 26th, 1969. Scans of both sides of this build record can be found by following the links behind the thumbnail images attached below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Thanks, Benson.

I acquired this canoe on Saturday from a Mr. Correy of Cambridge, Ma. Age 92, Mr. Correy is a wonderful and interesting gentleman who, like me, also loves Volvo 240s and smokes a pipe. It’s in very good condition.

At some point this trapper was repainted (OT Green). Instead of the traditional Old Town decal, whoever repainted it substituted on the sides a pretty ugly rectangular and shiny metallic sticker that is pretty strongly adhered to the paint. So far my efforts to pull off this sticker look like they’re going to pull the paint off too, which I don’t want to do.

Any ideas what is and how best to remove it?

These stickers are probably original and usually not easy to remove. The canoe was repainted at the factory according to the back side of the build record and the information at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/2430/ should give you more information about the decals. I would just leave them alone but it is your canoe.

Thanks Benson

This one is not a soak and apply decal and something I am sure the factory would not have used on a canoe, wood-canvas or otherwise. I’m sure the canoe was painted fairly recently as the stem-bands are painted over. I’m guessing it’s a sticker Old Town used on other boats that were made of metal and was the only thing the owner could find at the time.

It’s about 8 by 5 with the usual Old Town style script in white on a red background with a silver metallic border.

I did get two OT paddles in the deal, circa 1968. One is I think a “guide’ model with a huge wide blade.

The Old Town Maine Guide paddles were distinguished by a wide extended grip and the blades were available in various widths as shown at A2 from the 1978 catalog below. Old Town never sold metal boats but I would be curious to see a picture of your sticker if you can attach one. Thanks,

Benson

Will do.

I looked thru several hundred pix of OT canoes to try to find it’s like and no dice. I’m now wondering if it was meant for something else, like a car bumper sticker or an emblem for a dealership window?

One paddle has an 11 and half inch blade – a pizza peel! It’s a solid straight grained clear piece of wood too. The only like I’ve seen of it is a photo of Bill Riviere using one.
