Identifying a 16’ Wood Canvas Canoe

Hi All, I was recently gifted a 16” canoe (35.5” wide) with little to no background on its origin. The previous owners stated that his mother bought it at a yard sale from a neighbor “back in the day.” The wood on the canoe is in decent overall shape and will require some minor repairs. The canvas needs some patching and will eventually need to be replaced. Ribs are 3/8” thick and are spaced 1 3/4” apart. They are 2 1/4” wide but taper up to 1 1/2” at the gunwales. There are no visible serial numbers anywhere on the canoe. If anyone can provide insight to the make or origins it would be appreciated.

My guess would be a home made or a Canadian builder based on the keel screws. There have been hundreds of builders in Maine alone as shown at http://wcha.org/catalogs/maine-list.htm and only a few of them can be easily identified. Good luck and let us know if you ever figure it out,

Benson

Thanks Benson. I shared this info with the previous owner and his wife remembered hearing that the original owner had built the canoe.

I appreciate your insight and look forward to patching this canoe up and getting her in the water.
