Curious about Wooden Canoes
Just purchased an Old Town 18 ft canoe. Would love to know who restored it and any other information available. When was it made? Whoever restored it did beautiful work. It is a piece of art.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 148241 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, half ribs, and a keel. It was built between April and June, 1947. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 10th, 1947 to Pontiac, Michigan. The back side of the card indicates that it had moved to Pleasant Ridge, Michigan by March of 1971 when there was a previous request for a copy of this build record. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. This build record has no indication of who restored it or when. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson

How can I get a larger copy of the record? It is hard to read and if I expand it, it gets fuzzy. Thanks.

The somewhat dated information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?780 about scaling images for printing may help. These scans were made a long time ago and are a bit fuzzy. Enlarging an image beyond 100% rarely improves it. The front side of the original image is 961 by 1009 pixels which should be fine for reading. Good luck,

Benson
