At the risk of starting a thread on "wackiest canoe repairs", I submit the attached photo of a '40's - '50's vintage Peterborough "Otonobee", in need of a little work. Actually, there's little wrong with it except that 4" hole clean through the stern. Anybody seen anything like it? (Hint: it was not caused by cannon shot.)

Don,
What format is the picture and how big is it? If you still have trouble, email it to me at drgonfly@nycap.rr.com and I will try to sort it out...

Here is Don's Photo.
If I didn't know better, I'd think Jack Aubrey or Cap'n Black Bill Whalen was in the neighborhood....

Thanks, Dan, for getting the photo up. I like the bow thruster idea - very handy for windy days - but do you think the hole is too high?

Might be for a pair of headlights for night rides... or maybe he watched "The African Queen" one too many times

Hurons aren't that loved , in fact they aren't loved at all . Have you seen what bird shot does to wood at close range ?

Good answers. It took me a second to get the African Queen joke though. Its maybe the best. This post and photo is a definite nomination for inclusion in Wooden Canoe.

OK, enough of this. Larry B came closest to what I was told by the owner of the canoe (not that the rest of you were trying very hard) about what really happened. Mice built a nest in the stern of the overturned canoe during storage. I guess they got hungry and ate the walls of their house, or maybe wanted a view. Anyway, its all history now, as the repairs are about to disappear under a new canvas skin. Thanks for joining in the chuckles.
