Trimming new canvas

Is it best to leave newly painted canvas un-trimmed until the outwales are in place, or should I trim the canvas prior to installing outwales?

Yes, keep you canvas "long" until you're ready to install the outer rails.

Yes, trim the canvas to size and install the outer rails.

Don't make the mistake I made and trim the canvas before filling and painting. (you'll only do it once) :)

Your outwales won't fit well unless the canvas is trimmed to near the top of the planking.

Keep the canvas long for filling and painting. This way you don't have to mask the rib tops and inwales when filling and painting. I usually leave 4-6 inches of canvas and fill and paint beyond the top edge of planking to ensure that once I do trim it (after filling and painting) that it is filled and painted far enough to be complete when trimmed right at the edge of the top plank. Generally speaking the trim should be at the top or just slightly below the top edge of planking. this will allow for the outwale to fit properly.

PS: Like Dan says.......the first canvas you trim prior to filler application will be your last!! I learned that way!!

Camping on-campus is an option for $5/day/adult. Showers are available on campus as well.

I guess what I'm trying to find is the schedule of events for this years assembly, since I can only miss 2 days of work this year. I want to make sure I pick the right days to attend.

The full assembly schedule is part of the assembly packet, which is included in the June issue of Wooden Canoe. WC should be arriving in mailboxes shortly. As soon as I can get an electronic version, I will post it on the Assembly page of the WCHA web site.
